How typing in Hindi actually works here

You type Hindi words using English letters, spelling them the way they sound. As soon as you finish a word, it appears in Devanagari in the box on the right. mera naam becomes मेरा नाम, dhanyavaad becomes धन्यवाद. There is no keyboard layout to learn and nothing to memorise.

Roman letters cannot record everything Hindi needs. The same i stands for both इ and ई, and the same t stands for both त and ट. So for every word you also get a short row of alternative spellings. Click one, or press the number next to it. Around two hundred of the most common Hindi words are spelled from a built-in list instead of guessed, so nahi comes out as नहीं rather than the letter-by-letter नहि.

If you would rather pick letters directly, open the on-screen Hindi keyboard. It has the full Devanagari set — vowels, consonants, matras, the common conjuncts and Hindi digits — and inserts them straight into the output box.

Mangal, Kruti Dev and why it matters

Mangal is a Unicode font. Text typed in it is ordinary Hindi: it can be pasted into email, WhatsApp, a form or a document, and it reads correctly on any device, with or without Mangal installed. For almost everything you write, this is the option you want.

Kruti Dev is older than Unicode and works differently. It stores Hindi as Latin byte codes and relies on the font to draw them as Devanagari — so नमस्ते is literally stored as uelArs. Open that file on a machine without Kruti Dev and you see Latin gibberish. Several state government exams still set their typing papers in it, which is why the converter exists here and why it works in both directions.

If you are practising for a typing test, the speed test scores net WPM the way exam boards do: five characters count as one word, and your mistakes are subtracted rather than ignored.

Other ways to type Hindi, including the ones without us

Approach Best if you Where it falls short
The Windows Hindi keyboard (InScript) Anyone typing Hindi daily on the same Windows machine, and anyone sitting a government exam — InScript is what most of them use You have to learn a completely new key layout, and it is not on your phone or on a shared computer
Google Input Tools or the Gboard Hindi keyboard People who type Hindi on a phone often and are happy to install something Needs installing and permissions; on a borrowed or office computer you usually cannot
Copying Hindi out of a translator Someone who wants the MEANING changed, not the script A translator rewrites your sentence. If you already know what you want to say in Hindi, it gives you a different sentence back
This page You are on any computer or phone, you know what you want to say, and you just need it in Devanagari now Spelling is a guess from sound, so long vowels and nasal sounds sometimes need you to pick another option

Words you will meet on Hindi typing sites

Transliteration
Writing the same word in a different script. "namaste" and नमस्ते sound the same and mean the same — only the letters changed. This is not translation.
Devanagari
The script Hindi, Marathi, Nepali and Sanskrit are written in. It is recognisable by the horizontal line running along the top of the words.
Unicode
The modern standard where each letter has one fixed code worldwide. Hindi written in Unicode reads correctly on any device, with no special font.
Mangal
A Unicode Devanagari font shipped with Windows. Because it is Unicode, "typing in Mangal" simply means typing normal Hindi.
Kruti Dev
A legacy font from before Unicode. It stores Hindi as Latin byte codes, so the same file reads as gibberish on a machine without the font. Still required by several state exams.
Matra
The vowel mark attached to a consonant — the ी in नी. Most matras follow their consonant, but ि is written to its left, which is why converters get it wrong.
Net WPM
Typing speed after mistakes are subtracted. Five characters count as one word. Government typing exams score this way, not by counting spaces.

Questions people actually ask

Is this a Hindi translator?
No, and the difference matters. This changes the script, not the meaning: you type namaste and get नमस्ते. If you type how are you you will get हाउ आरे यू — the English words spelled in Devanagari. To change meaning you need a translator instead.
Does my text go to your server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser, in JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored and nothing is logged — you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it keeps working.
Why did it spell my word differently from what I expected?
English letters do not record everything Hindi needs. i can be इ or ई, t can be त or ट, and nasal sounds can be written two ways. Common words come from a built-in dictionary; for the rest you get up to six alternatives under the box — click one, or press its number key.
What is the difference between Mangal and Kruti Dev?
Mangal is Unicode: the text is real Hindi and reads anywhere. Kruti Dev is a legacy font that stores Hindi as Latin byte codes, so it only looks like Hindi on a machine with that font installed. Several state exams still require Kruti Dev, which is why the converter is here.
Can I use this for a CPCT, BELTRON or UPSSSC typing test?
You can practise with it. The speed test has 1, 3, 5 and 15 minute presets and scores net WPM the same way exams do. It is practice, not the exam software, and we do not claim to reproduce any exam board's environment.
Do I need to install anything?
No. There is nothing to install, no account and no payment. You do need a Devanagari font on your device to see Hindi, and every current version of Windows, Android, iOS and macOS ships with one.
