How the score is calculated

Net WPM is the number that matters. Five characters count as one word — including spaces — and every character you got wrong is subtracted before the speed is worked out. That is how government typing examinations score, and it is why a fast typist with sloppy accuracy can end up below a slower, careful one.

Accuracy is shown separately as a percentage of the characters you typed that match the sample. Most state examinations set a minimum on both numbers at once, so a very high speed does not rescue a low accuracy. Watching the two together while you practise is more useful than chasing either on its own.

The passage is built fresh for every run and for the length you picked, so you cannot learn one by heart and flatter your own score — and a fifteen minute test does not run out of text after ten seconds. Correct characters go grey, mistakes are highlighted, and the character you are on is underlined, so you see the error the moment it happens instead of finding out at the end.

Choosing the length

The four presets match the lengths people actually sit. One minute is for a quick check of where you are today. Three, five and fifteen minutes are the durations used by UPSSSC, BELTRON and CPCT respectively, and they feel very different: stamina and concentration matter far more at fifteen minutes than raw finger speed.

If you are preparing for an examination, practise at the full length at least sometimes. A score measured over sixty seconds is almost always higher than the one you will manage over fifteen minutes, and pacing yourself against the shorter number is how people get an unpleasant surprise on the day.

You do not need a Devanagari keyboard layout to sit the test. Leave Type in English switched on and write the passage the way it sounds — भारत as bharat — and each word turns into Hindi the moment you press space. The unfinished word stays in Latin and is not scored until it is converted, so the timer never punishes you for a word in progress.
