Mangal is Unicode, and that changes everything

Mangal is the Devanagari font that ships with Windows, and the important thing about it is not how it looks but what it is. Mangal is a Unicode font: every letter has the standard worldwide code for that letter. Text you type in Mangal is simply Hindi. It can be pasted into an online form, an email, a WhatsApp message or a Word document and it will read correctly on a phone, a Mac or a Linux machine that has never heard of Mangal.

This is worth stating plainly because "typing in Mangal" sounds like it needs special software, and it does not. If you produce ordinary Unicode Hindi — which is what this page does — you have already produced Mangal-compatible text. Selecting Mangal in Word afterwards only changes the shapes on screen, not the underlying letters.

Because it is the standard, Mangal is what most government departments now ask for, and what almost every online form expects.

Mangal against Kruti Dev

Kruti Dev predates Unicode and works on an entirely different principle. It stores Hindi as Latin byte codes and depends on the font to draw them as Devanagari, so the word नमस्ते is stored as the characters uelArs. Send that to somebody without the font and they receive nonsense.

Kruti Dev has not gone away, because several state examination boards still set typing papers in it and a great deal of older office material exists in it. That is a real reason to keep it, and it is why this site includes a converter that works in both directions.

For anything you are writing today, Unicode is the safer choice. Use Kruti Dev when something specific requires it, and convert into Unicode when you want the text to outlive the font.
